A small group learning together around a table

Research & Learning Group

Bridging practitioner and academic research to improve the evidence base for welcome.

About

The Welcome Coalition Research and Learning Group brings together practitioners, academics, and the voluntary and civil society sectors. Through quarterly meetings, members share research, whether work in progress or finished projects, to get feedback, explore new ideas, and discuss common challenges in greater depth.

The group has 17+ organisations participating in whatever capacity they are able to. We are open to more members, and are particularly interested in bringing in more researchers working in frontline services and/or with lived experience of migration, to share their research, views and questions.

Our approach

The aims of the Research & Learning Group.

Bridge and strengthen existing knowledge

Sharing research, learning and good practice on welcome and integration, helping different projects complement rather than duplicate one another.

Build stronger links between research and practice

Connecting academics, frontline organisations, policymakers and people with lived experience of migration.

Improve the quality and impact of research

Providing methodological guidance, supporting collaboration and encouraging credible, participatory approaches shaped by lived experience.

Identify evidence gaps and develop a shared research agenda

Focused on the most pressing questions about what works in creating welcoming communities.

Increase the influence of research findings

Exploring effective ways to communicate and disseminate evidence, inform policy and develop collaborative proposals for future research.

Our flagship project

Mapping and Evaluating Existing Welcome Spaces and Networks, funded by the Henry Smith Foundation, is building a clear national picture of welcome across the UK.
